The performance of the opera St. François d’Assise of Olivier Messiaen with the SWR Symphony Orchestra under Sylvain Cambreling in Madrid was a very special project for me. Ilya Kabakov’s stage set with its huge, illuminated cone was developed for the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum and simply did not fit into the Teatro Real. Supporting Gerard Mortier in looking for a suitable venue, working out an acoustic concept for the Madrid Arena, tuning the Vivace system and supporting the rehearsals and the opening night was an exceptionally great experience in every way. Especially the voice of Camilla Tilling as Angel, floating from a distant position through the huge volume of the sports arena is something I will never forget.
