Delivering state-of-the-art sound quality has always been the aim of the Bregenz Festival at the world’s largest floating stage. Starting in 2017 I got the opportunity to develop together with the sound department of the festival the next steps on this journey. The focus of my work was to improve the perceived room acoustics by creating and adding a concert hall sound to the sound objects distributed on the stage. Finding a way to overcome the restrictions imposed by the impressive size of the audience seating needed a lot of simulation work and on-site testing of different loudspeakers. Between 2018 and 2019 new masts with three height layers of loudspeakers were installed around the audience and a Vivace system was added. In 2021 the system was supplemented by additional under-seat speakers providing even more possibilities to shape and adapt the perceived room acoustics. The sound department has now a really enviable toy at hand.
