Sydney Opera House Concert Hall

This project is doubtless the highlight of my working life up to now. After a short competition phase the project started in 2015 with acoustic measurements and numerous visits of rehearsals and concerts to understand the acoustic properties and challenges of this hall. Together with my colleague Jürgen Reinhold and with the help of some specifically developed simulation tools we designed acoustic measures to overcome these challenges and emphasize the virtues of the hall. Due to the high importance of the venue, it was possible to test large parts of these measures in two concert blocks with Christoph von Dohnányi and Pinchas Zukerman. After a construction phase of more than two years the hall reopened in July 2022 with a gala concert of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under its new chief conductor Simone Young. The joy of being part of the first rehearsals and concerts and seeing that all efforts were unbelievably rewarded is simply indescribable. The resulting acoustics is now very close to my ideal for a large concert hall. Thank you very much to all the wonderful people I had the pleasure to work with in this project!
